Characters [5*****]

Excellent characters with a very unique development.

Translation [5*****]

The action scenes, though sparce, are done very well. And the main conflict is quite long, but is rightly done so. This is quite an adventure for the action portion of the movie. Is somewhat of a nail-biter... even 50 years later! No special effects are needed, and nothing is cheesy!

Class Struggle [3***]

All-in-all this movie is trying to make a statement about class struggle and a little bit on human nature itself. It doesn't deliver it so well or clear, but I think this has a lot to do with the fact that (a)-I am not Japanese, (b)-This is not 1954, and (c)-The combination of these two things are meant for the full understanding of this film. So, sorry, but I can not exactly give a great opinion on this part.. due to my lack of experience, etc!

Overall [4****]

Very engaging and honest movie. Not the most moving movie to me, but very entertaining. I loved the intermission! More movies should have this! If this were 50 years ago, I could easily give it a 5*****, but that's not the case... so viewing the film today will only give the above quality. Japanese film lovers will love this one. It's a classic.
