Suspense [4****]
This is the most surprising thing about United 93... it's so suspenseful. And it's mostly due to the fact that we know what's going to happen. Though the actors of the highjackers are pretty good and portray their nervousness, which makes us more anxious.
Characters [3***]
But when it's all said and done, tried to be both heroic and realistic... the characters are fairly believable (especially since they are supposed to just be normal people), though maybe a little bit over-acting. I don't doubt that in such tragic situations, people will be overcome with many emotions, but from a cinematic perspective, it comes through the screen a little too awkwardly sometimes. The calls home are very touching though.
Behind-the-scenes [3***]
Most of the movie is kind of a recreation of the FAA, military, and various flight control towers' responses to the events. This is kind of unexpected, but adds kind of a unique feel to the plot, and really brings back memories of how many people saw the events unfold. It seems to take place in real-time too.
Overall [3***]
I think Americans ought to watch this, either for the lessons learned or a little better understanding of what happened. Yes, this is not a true story, word for word, but it's a decent portrayal of one of the most important events of the millenium. That said, it's enjoyable and interesting.
