Review:
V for Vendetta
Country: USA
Year: 2006
Genres: Revolution, Political, Action
Action [4****]
Though quite dispersed and definitely non-overpowering, the action of Vendetta is exciting, resfreshing, and quite conclusive. If it weren't for the quality of the sequences, there would be a complain about a lack of action. But for a political, one doesn't expect a mass gore of blood and violence. But don't take this as an excuse to go easy on nasty scenes, Vendetta looks to overturn a few statics of a couple genres, and does it. Enjoyable and refreshing. I wouldn't say totally original, as it shows signs that the crew from The Matrix were working on them.
Characters [3***]
Well thought and developed here. The masked revolutionaire, V, is quite a character, though he turns out to be a little weak, and turns dynamic in kind of a strange way. Portman pulls off a good role, but she still seems limited to a certain type of feminist role: overly-emotional and a little too dumb (as opposed to Demi Moore of G.I. Jane who goes the opposite way of the woman stereotype).
Enjoyment [4****]
It's just a fun movie to watch. It may be slow to someone looking for a hollywood action flick, but it truly is great for the type of movie it is. Almost anyone can enjoy it, that is if you don't totally object to the premise, which only a select number of political philosophers would.
Overall [4****]
There is a political message in this film, and it is quite obvious. It is also apparent that the makers aren't too serious about it. The politics are a little over-the-top, but in a movie like this, believable enough to set aside anything that seems unrealistic. Go for the ride on this one, even more than once it will be entertaining and a little intellectually stimulating.
